Layer 3 switch offers VLAN capability
We have extended our popular Allen-Bradley Stratix 8000™ industrial switch family to include a new variant – the Stratix 8300™ – a full-featured Layer 3 switch.

The new Stratix 8300 offers static, dynamic, multicast and policy-based routing, helping give users maximum flexibility to provide secure segmented architectures for industrial Ethernet applications.
Its Cisco Catalyst operating system, feature set and user interface, provides seamless integration to the enterprise network, using tools familiar to IT professionals, while also providing comprehensive diagnostic information from within the Rockwell Automation Integrated Architecture™ system, using tools familiar to manufacturing professionals.
As the evolution of Ethernet on the plant floor continues to grow exponentially with new applications such as motion, safety and I/O, IP traffic has increased significantly and proper segmentation to the network is becoming more important. VLANs become a best practice to segment networks by function rather than location in the plant. The Stratix 8300 with Layer 3 functionality provides communications between the segmented networks for better performance, better security and protection from broadcast storms on the network.
Proper network segmentation helps users to:
• Get beyond performance bottlenecks of collapsed architectures
• Avoid the high cost of expanding plant networks when increasing production by adding new machines
• Reduce costs and improve performance compared to software-based routers
• Protect against broadcast storms while allowing workstations access to the required resources
